On that note, here is everything you need to know in the month of May!
On Wednesday, Savage Beauty, an exhibition celebrating the late Alexander McQueen’s contributions to fashion, will open at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Starting with his postgraduate collection of 1992 and ending with his final runway presentation, which took place shortly after his death in February 2010, the exhibition will include over 100 of his most iconic pieces. Savage Beauty runs through July 31, 2011. If you can’t attend, make sure you pick up the accompanying book, also titled Savage Beauty ($29.14).
We have spent plenty of hours mulling over our spring/summer wardrobe and subsequently filling our shopping list with must-have pieces. The latest addition to our list? Anything from Los Angeles-based jewelry designer Vanessa Mooney. Since starting her eponymous line in 2009, Mooney has become known for her glamorous jewelry collections, which have a rocker-meets-boho vibe. Accordingly, here pieces are perfect for the music festival season, which is why you should definitely check out the latest collection at VanessaMooney.com today!
YSL Volupte Sheer Candy Collection
If you are a beauty fiend, this is one collection you won’t want to miss out on. YSL Beauty has just launched the Volupte Sheer Candy lipgloss collection. The six-piece lineup sounds good enough to eat—colors include cherry, berry, pomegranate, grapefruit, papaya, and coconut. What makes this collection stand out, however, is the application; the formula allows lightweight coverage with plenty of color. The collection is available now at YSL Beauty counters and Sephora stores, as well as online at Sephora.com.
Forget aviators and wayfarers. If you want to stand out this season, you need to opt for quirky silhouettes and unusual color combinations. For example, take a look at House Of Harlow 1960’s Chelsea Sunglasses ($138). The extreme cat-eye makes these shades stand out from the pack, which is exactly what you should be looking for this summer. Other options: brightly colored frames, heart-shaped styles, neon shades. On that note, we suggest you head to your nearest vintage boutique and start your search.
H&M Conscious Collection
Nothing feels better than doing your part for the environment and looking fashionable at the same time, which is why we must mention H&M’s Conscious Collection. Made from environmentally-adapted materials such as organic cotton, Tencel, and recycled polyester, the collection features white pieces embellished with romantic lace, ruffles, Broderie Anglaise, and frills, such as a Grecian gown, a scalloped mini dress, and a cropped tee. The collection is available now at H&M stores. Prices start at $9.95.
For the fashion world, the blockbuster hit of the summer is sure to be L’Amour Fou, the new documentary from Pierre Thoretton. L’Amour Fou tells the story of Yves Saint Laurent through the eyes of Pierre Bergé, his partner in business and life. Bergé discusses every part of the relationship—from meeting Saint Laurent to starting up the famed fashion house. The movie opens in New York on May 13, Los Angeles on May 20, and in select cities around the country after that.
Met Gala 2011
Tonight, the crème de la crème of fashion events, the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala, takes place in New York City. Expect a slew of fashion industry insiders, celebrities, and models to hit the red carpet in style. Actress Blake Lively is planning to wear Chanel, model Britt Maren is wearing Winter Kate, and you can also expect plenty of vintage McQueen—this year’s theme is Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. (The event coincides with the launch of the aforementioned Savage Beauty exhibit.)
