We don’t know many women who can say no to a luxuriously soft cardigan or a perfectly slouchy tee, and in the last few years, Los Angeles-based label LNA has become the go-to label for luxe basics like these. With that said, we decided to sit down with Lauren Alexander and April Leight, the designing duo behind LNA, for a quick chat on who their daily schedule, the concept behind the brand, and the secret new product they are launching next year.
Hi guys! Do you mind just introducing yourselves to our readers?
We are Lauren and April, the L and the A of LNA.
You launched LNA back in the summer of 2007—do you remember when you first came up with the idea to start your own line?
We were standing in a parking lot after lunch one day and just decided to go for it.
The concept behind LNA is to provide “luxury staples.” Why did you decide to go in this direction?
It’s as simple as we just wanted to make the perfect t-shirt for ourselves. If we don’t love it, then we don’t make it.
When did you realize you had “made it” as a label?
That’s a tough one! But maybe when Madonna, Kate Moss, and Brad Pitt all requested LNA in the same day.
What was the biggest challenge when you started?
One of the hardest parts about starting LNA was (and still is) production.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Most often our inspiration comes from California and the lifestyle here. There is an ease in the way everyone dresses and it is the perfect place for “basics”. The music world is also a big part of what influences us each season.
Can you walk us through a day in your life?
8am: Make a Starbucks run and walk Samson, the LNA long-haired Chihuahua. 9am: Arrive at the LNA headquarters in Culver City. 10/11am: Head downtown to check on patterns, new fabric, and production. 12pm: Have lunch at our fav restaurant, Cabbage Patch. We eat there 5 days a week! 1pm: Have fittings and review all the new designs. 2-5pm: Work on designs and all other office work. 5pm: Go home and work more!
Where do you see LNA in five years?
We’d love to open our own stores!
Finally, do you have any other ventures in the pipeline?
We are working on a new addition to LNA that will launch with the spring 2013 collection. It’s something that goes perfectly with your LNA tee but that’s about all we can say for now.
