Today is Shrove Tuesday and many British people will be indulging in pancakes. Of course you can enjoy pancakes at any time and they can make the perfect sweet or savory treat but they are so much more tasty if you make the batter from scratch. Here are some top tips for pancake perfection as well as inspiration for toppings or fillings.
A good pan is key. Use 100g of flour, 2 eggs and 300ml of milk (it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3). Break the eggs into the milk and whisk. Make a well in the center of the flour and whisk in the milk. Add extra milk if required to get the consistency you like. Get your frying pan really hot and add a little oil. Ladle a spoonful of batter into the pan and lift the mixture from the sides of the pan with a pallette knife to check the underside. Once golden flip away.
Lemon and sugar are usually the most preferred topping but why stop there. Indulge in chocolate spread, golden syrup, strawberries, bananas, cream, ice cream or even nuts. You could even add marshmallows or chocolate chips to your batter mixture for added texture.
You may like savory toppings or fillings with your pancakes so why not try a breakfast option with eggs and bacon, or team cheese with onion, mushrooms or tomatoes. You could even indulge in some tasty chicken, smoked salmon or tuna mayo.
Remember your first pancake may not be perfect and may well be only suitable for the bin or for the dog but keep practicing because trust us each pancake you make will be better than the last and the flipping part is so much fun. Enjoy and eat up!
