Summer is officially here, and that means (among many things) brand new trends to try! From brightly colored manis to sultry brown smoky eyes, here are five of the hottest looks for 2013’s summer season.
Matte Red Lips
Matte looks can be tricky during the summer, when temps soar and humidity is high. But you can still maintain an all-matte look if that’s what you like, and this summer, it’s all about rocking a bold, shine-free red lip, the more muted the better. NARS’s ultra-pigmented Pure Matte Lipsticks, $26, are perfect for this effect. Our current favorite is Valparaiso, a rich, raspberry red.
Brown Smoky Eyes
We love a slick black smoky eye, but this summer expect to see more brown and gold-hued lids when you’re out on the town. The look is both sexy and summery, and you can easily add some gold powdered shadow for a hint of flirty shimmer. We suggest trying Dior’s 3-Couleurs Smoky Eyes Palette in Smoky Khaki, $48, which contains everything you’ll need to create a smoldering look. Of course, Dior ain’t cheap, so if you’re looking for something a little less expensive, try Forever21’s Smoky Eyeshadow Palette in Brown/Natural, $7. You don’t have to break the bank to get gorgeous, golden lids.
Easy Summer Updos
Easy updos are in style every summer season. They’re kind of a no brainer—the best way to get some much-needed air onto your neck, as well as keep strands from straying onto your face. There’s nothing quite like a cute top knot, which is one of our favorite easy updos. Just lift your hair high through a ponytail holder, then twist into a coil, or place pieces around your pony holder and pull the ends back into the elastic. Done and done.
Another beauty favorite that’s back this season are beachy, sun-soaked waves. Now when we say sun-soaked, remember that’s part of the crafted look. In reality, you want to make sure to protect your hair from sun, salt, and chlorine damage with a protectant spray. Once you’ve done that, it’s not hard to achieve surfer-girl strands. Bumble and bumble’s legendary Surf Spray, $25, adds just the right amount of texture and not too much hold, so your hair truly does look sun-swept. We also love Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray, $6, if only for the smell alone, which is basically like sweet, salty-air beach memories in a bottle.
We’re loving Essie’s new Naughty Nautical collection, especially “Rock the Boat”, which is a beautiful, shimmering blue. You’ll be seeing a lot of pastel painted nails this summer—especially emeralds and greens, like OPI’s Gargantuan Green Grape. Bust out your sunglasses, gals, because it looks like the summer of 2013 is going to be very, very bright!
