Top Buys: Fall 2010 Outerwear

Here at Mama’s A Rolling Stone, we have a soft spot for fall. In fact, in the dog days of summer, you’ll usually find us scouring beauty sites for deep plum lipsticks and rich moisturizing creams, transforming our favorite sundresses into flawless layering pieces, or prepping our closet for a slew of new outerwear, which brings us to today’s story. To be specific: for our latest edition of Top Buys, we have scouted out a cornucopia of classic camel coats, chic capes, and of-the-moment outerwear options, all of which are just perfect for fall.  On that note, let us introduce you to the four outerwear trends we are most excited about this season: shearling, faux fur, camel coats, and capes. Cozy, comfortable and, most importantly, chic, there is something for girls of every ilk in these four fall looks. That’s right—whether you prefer the rocker-chic aesthetic of a shearling biker jacket, or the refined sophistication of a camel coat, we’re sure you’ll find plenty of inspiration and ideas in today’s story, Top Buys: Fall 2010 Outerwear.

Thanks to brands like Ralph Lauren, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and, most notably, Burberry, shearling is the outerwear trend on everyone’s minds this fall. Whether it is adorning the trim of an oversized motorcycle jacket, embellishing the edge of a leather vest, or giving a pair of ankle booties a cozy element, the fashion world is simply smitten! Plus, thanks to the ever-increasing popularity of this luxe fabric, there are a slew of shearling pieces available! Our favorites? We love McGinn’s Dree Faux Leather Jacket ($495)—the rich chocolate-brown fabric and shearling trim make this a great option for day and night. We recommend pairing it with a draped bandage dress and a pair of slick ankle boots. By the same token, we love Burberry Prorsum’s Cropped Shearling Aviator Jacket ($2,995). Its oversized silhouette, luxe shearling lining, and aviator-inspired embellishments make it the ultimate addition to your fall closet!

Here at Mama’s A Rolling Stone, we have a saying: where Chanel goes, we will follow. Accordingly, when we spotted Karl Lagerfeld’s faux fur-heavy Chanel collection for fall, we were, simply put, sold. Whether you choose a shaggy Penny Lane-inspired coat, or reference the glamour of the 1930s with a luxe cropped jacket, we are happy to report there are plenty of options to pick from. For the girl who prefers a rock & roll edge, we recommend Anna Sui’s Faux-Fur Cropped Jacket ($350). Worn with skinny jeans and thigh-high boots, the ultra-soft black faux fur and cropped silhouette will give your outfit a strong and sexy twist. If you prefer a bohemian vibe, we suggest Free People’s Leopard Coat ($198)—the animal print has a cool, 1970s-inspired attitude, the drop waist is super-feminine, and the oversized hood is sure to keep you cozy and chic throughout the season.

Nothing is more sophisticated this fall than a chic camel coat. If you don’t believe us, take a quick look at the Fall 2010 runways—industry heavyweights such as Chloe, DKNY, and Aquascutum all revealed perfectly polished iterations. The bonus? A camel coat never goes out of style—while it may be a major fall trend this year, you can use it season upon season, which makes it an investment piece. Our most wanted? Our eyes were instantly drawn to the pleated finish and swing silhouette on ASOS’s Pleated Swing Coat ($117.95). We recommend pairing it with a black minidress, knit tights, and round-toed platform pumps to create a sleek and sophisticated ensemble. We’re equally enamored with M Missoni’s Knit Insert Coat ($1,195) thanks to its bohemian-luxe aesthetic. While the camel-colored wool gives this coat a 1970s vibe (think Almost Famous meets Love Story,) the metallic accents and dolman sleeves make it thoroughly modern.

If there is one outerwear trend we are simply dying to try this fall, it is the cape. Of course, we have our reasons: (a) capes are oh-so-versatile—they can be worn day, night, indoors, outdoors; (b) capes exude ease and effortlessness—just throw one over your shoulders and away you go; and, (c) there are just too many options available to say no! On our wishlist? This season, we love French Connection’s FC72 Hooded Wool Mix Cape ($269.60). The navy-blue hue is elegant, the silhouette is edgy, and the pom-poms are playful—what more could we ask for? In the same way, we adore Alexander Wang’s Velvet Cape-Back Coat ($695). As you know, velvet is one of fall’s favorite fabrics and black is always a chic option. Plus, the leather wrap belt and trim will give your outfit the rock & roll edge that regularly radiates from anything Alexander Wang touches.
