Top Buys: Fall 2011 Essentials

Cold weather is just around the corner, dear readers, which means you are probably knee-deep in fall fashion—from planning outfits for chilly days to scoping out all the must-try fall trends. Now, if all this preparation has left you feeling a little frazzled, you can rest easy knowing you are not alone. Happily, today’s Top Buys story is a shopping guide to the key pieces you need for fall. Whether you plan to invest in just one piece, or you want a whole new wardrobe, consider this your shopping list to all the essentials for fall 2011.

Now, if you want to start your fall shopping off by making a statement, we definitely suggest you pick up a sheer maxi dress like Clover Canyon’s Long Sleeve Maxi Shirtdress ($253). Not only is the style totally on-trend, but it is a great transitional piece—breezy enough for those oddly warm fall days, but cool enough to take you through the end of the year. Of course, a few chic separates are always a must. This season, a chunky Southwest-print knit like Proenza Schouler’s Chunky-Knit Wool-Blend Sweater ($1,190) is a great investment. You can layer it over a shift skirt or pair it with skinny jeans, but either way, it will bring plenty of life to any outfit. We also suggest you pick up a pair of wide leg pants like M Missoni’s Wide-Leg Wool-Blend Pants ($625). Although these might seem tricky, they are surprisingly easy to wear. The key to this look is to balance the oversized silhouette of the pants by pairing them with a slim-fit top. In addition, make sure the hem almost touches the ground, whether you wear them with flats or a chunky wedge. Lastly, you are sure to need a fab new coat when the weather turns. This season, we suggest you pick up a chic cape coat like Burberry Brit’s Leather Trim Wool Cape ($650). The leather trim ensures that this cape stands on its own, while the neutral navy color makes certain that you can wear this cape with just about anything in your closet.

Of course, your shopping list wouldn’t be complete without a selection of must-have accessories now, would it? On that note, if you are planning to add to your shoe collection this fall, we suggest picking up a pair of python-print heels in a bright color; we like Zara’s Snake Skin Court Shoes ($129). These shoes will definitely draw attention, so wear them with something simple like a little black dress or a pair of cigarette jeans. If you can’t go a season without a new handbag, the key this fall is to pick up a structured satchel like J Crew’s Edie Purse ($448). The structured silhouette has a preppy vibe, which means you can have plenty of fun with the print—we like leopard, but bright neon colors are also having a moment. Now, if you are looking to fill out your jewelry box, they key piece to look for this fall is a choker necklace like Topshop’s Metal Beaten Collar Necklace ($35). Look for solid gold or silver pieces if you want something classic, or pick up a mixed-media piece if you like your jewelry to be the focus of your outfit. Finally, we have a little something for your beauty kit. A neutral nail is essential this season, so pick up a low-key polish like Dior’s Vernis Nail Lacquer in Mitzah Camel ($22). Trust us, there is nothing ‘neutral’ about this look! Happy shopping!
