Top Buys: Spring 2011 Essentials

Spring has officially arrived, dear readers, and summer is just around the bend. Accordingly, we’re sure you have plenty on your mind—between plotting outfits for the warm weather ahead, soaking in all the major trends, and taking style notes from your favorite celebrities. If the aforementioned planning has you feeling a little overwhelmed, don’t fret—we have a plan of action in place! Today’s Top Buys story is a summary of the season’s key pieces or, if you will, a shopping guide to what you need now! So, whether you plan on buying just one piece this season, or one of everything, make sure you check out all our spring 2011 essentials and take plenty of notes! Read on!

If you want to start your spring shopping off on the right foot, make sure you pick up a white shift dress, such as ASOS’s Cowl Back Shift Dress ($80.69). Not only is white the perfect hue for warm weather, but a shift silhouette is decidedly modern and oh-so chic. Likewise, we suggest you grab a pleated skirt akin to Topshop’s Pleated Short Skirt ($70). It doesn’t matter whether you opt for a bright color like we have, or classic black, because in this case, it is all about texture. What will you pair your pleated skirt with? A cropped top, such as All Saints’s Zach Top ($110), will look amazing with a pleated skirt—the cropped silhouette will give the illusion of a higher waist and longer legs. Plus, cropped tops call to mind the alternative vibe of the early 1990s—a decade that fashion loves to return to. Another decade that consistently pops up in the fashion world is the 1970s, and this season is no different. Two of our key pieces—wide-leg jeans and kimono jackets—instantly evoke the bohemian-luxe mood of that decade, so make sure you add these pieces to your shopping strategy. Our suggestions? We like J Brand’s Babe Bell Bottom Jeans ($196) and Topshop’s Feather Fringed Kimono ($120).

Now, dear readers, accessories! If you are planning to add to your shoe closet this spring, make sure you pick up a pair of 1970s-inspired platform sandals—specifically, look for chunky heels, rounded toes and, preferably, bright colors. We like Miu Miu’s Platform Sandals ($452)—these will look amazing with your white shift dress and your wide-leg jeans! If handbags are your poison, the key this spring is to pick up a “mini” version of a brightly-colored bag, which is why we love Marc Jacobs’ Debbie Crossbody Bag ($548)—it checks all the boxes, plus, it is an investment piece you will carry season after season. Finally, we have a little something for your jewelry box. The key piece this spring is a tribal necklace—whether you choose a statement piece, like Free People’s Santo Collar Necklace ($38), or a cool beaded pendant. So, dear readers—that’s a wrap! Now that you have your shopping cheat-sheet, you know what to do! Happy shopping!
