Last week marked forty years since Woodstock, the music festival widely regarded as one of the greatest and most important moments in the history of music.
Fashion might not have been the focus at Woodstock back in 1969. However, forty years on, designers are recreating some of the best hippie-inspired pieces so that you can bring an updated version of the Summer of Love to your closets.
If you’re looking to get your hippie on and you want to get inspired, take a look at some original Woodstock photos or catch Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock when it opens next week. Or, throw on some Janis Joplin or Jimi Hendrix and let the music take you back.
When it comes to Woodstock fashion, less is usually more. Start out with small pieces like the Floppy Straw Hat ($12.99) from Charlotte Russe or the House of Harlow 1960 Leather Drop Necklace ($65) from Bloomingdales.
With so many great Woodstock-inspired pieces right at your fingertips, it was hard for us to pick our top buys but we’ve managed to cut it down to these ten incredible picks.

1. Dahlia Jumper ($195) from Diane Von Furstenberg
In 1969, rompers were probably not as fashionable as this snappy little number from DVF but in 2009, the floral romper is totally on trend. This romper, with its mini-dress shape, its bright print and its slouchy style, would look perfect with a pair of brown leather sandals. Oh yeah – the bright print has been aptly named Woodstock Buds Blue – what more could you ask for?
2. Painted Lily Sunglasses ($14) from Fred Flare
Yes, oversized sunglasses have been making the rounds for years now but have you ever seen such an appropriate pair for your trip back to the Summer of Love? The hand painted design will add a touch of nature to your wardrobe, while the celebrity-inspired oversized shape will leave you looking as stylish as ever.
3. Knitted Gilet ($100) from Topshop
When I think Woodstock, I always think Janis Joplin and her oversized fur hat. In modern times, I would much prefer this gorgeous faux fur gilet from Topshop with its crochet back. Perfect for throwing over a summer dress as we move into fall, this gilet will probably sell out quickly (as I plan to make a purchase before the end of this post).
4. Hippie Vintage Belt ($168) from Free People
If you’ve ever searched far and wide for that perfectly worn-in leather belt, search no further. Free People have created the ideal belt; shabby chic leather with a selection of vintage buckles. Pair it with a pair of tattered denim bellbottom jeans and some vintage wedge sandals and you’re good to go.
5. Sam Edelman Women’s Ursula Boot ($69.43) from Endless Shoes
The words “Sam Edelman” are on the lips of every shoe-lover at the moment and we just spotted these fringed ankle boots. These boots instantly struck us as being incredibly versatile. Paired with a floral mini dress or a pair of skinny jeans, they will add a quick dose of boho-chic to your closet.

6. Ethnic Flutter Top ($19.99) from Charlotte Russe
This delicate top perfectly combines an ethnic/boho print with an on-trend metallic edge that will leave you feeling like a modern Woodstock festival-goer. Wear it with a pair of denim cut-offs and bare legs for summer. Come fall, add faded jeans to the mix for an look that is just as chic.
7. Forever Young Tee ($14.99) by Delias
For those that prefer to be bold with their statements, this Forever Young tee screams Woodstock-era without so much as a hint of floral prints or suede fringe. This tee can be worn with a pair of leather leggings or with acid-wash denim for a tough, modern look with just a hint of peace and love.
8. Jami Rodriguez Haute Hippie Black Onyx Dove Earrings ($105) from Max & Chloe
Though the dove featured on these earrings is reminiscent of the classic Woodstock poster (i.e. dove sitting on guitar), the black gives them a modern edge. Add to this some on-trend chains and you have yourself one amazing earring that can be paired with just about anything, from your favorite little black dress to a casual jeans & tee combo.
9. Victorian Hippie Gold Sparkle Belt/Headband ($253) from Revolve Clothing
While headbands have been making the rounds for a few years (thanks to the ever-stylish Nicole Richie, in part), now seems to be the perfect time to add some hippie headwear to your stash of accessories. This headband has some flapper-era flair that easily transcends through the 60s to today.
10. Urban Renewal Gauze Pants ($48) from Urban Outfitters
Though I am one of those people who can’t pull off harem pants to save myself, I am always, always, scouring the shops for them, just in case they happen to be “the ones”. With just the right amount of gauziness to keep you comfortable in summer, these might be them.
