Trend Report: Capes

When brands such as Christian Dior, Rag & Bone, and William Rast featured capes in their fall runway shows, we paid attention, as did tastemakers like Sienna Miller, Gwen Stefani, and Rachel Bilson. Soon enough, a trend was born, which leads us to today’s story. We have the scoop on who’s wearing the cape, how they’re styling it, and where you can pick up your very own! On that note, we present our latest Trend Report! Read on!

Sienna Miller
British actress Sienna Miller is known for her ability to mix modern pieces with vintage finds, so we weren’t surprised to see her wearing a vintage-inspired cape to a carol service in London in December. By layering her cape over a black mini dress and adding black knee-high boots, Sienna has created a sophisticated look that stays true to her modern-boho aesthetic. For a similar look, layer American Apparel’s Wool Cape ($170) over your favorite little black dress.

Kim Kardashian
Whether she’s walking the red carpet or shopping in Hollywood, one thing is certain: Kim Kardashian knows how to dress for her shape. We love the way she has tempered her cape’s oversized silhouette by pairing it with skinny jeans and sandals. To try this look for yourself, layer Gryphon’s Black Sherlock Cape ($375) or Ralph Lauren’s Leather-Trim Cashmere Cape ($419) over a pair of skinny jeans. Then, simply add a pair of Michael Antonio’s Darko Sandals ($38.31).

Kristen Bell
Actress Kristen Bell was spotted in London in December wearing a shining example of the perfect winter outfit: a sleek cape, thigh-high boots, and a felt hat. We love the way her ensemble pays tribute to the Swinging London aesthetic of the 1960s without straying too far from modern times. To create a similar look, pair Isabella Oliver 365’s The Cape ($155.60) or Vanessa Bruno’s Knit Cape ($562.50) with Aldo’s Manzi Boots and Deena & Ozzy’s Felt Hat ($34).

Rachel Bilson
Actress Rachel Bilson has a reputation for creating casual-yet-chic ensembles that are perfect for a day out. Example? Just a few weeks ago, Rachel was spotted in Los Feliz wearing a toggled cape, jeans, and shearling-trimmed ankle boots—just the right mix of on-trend pieces and closet staples. To take your cues from Rachel, grab ASOS’s Cotton Duffle Cape ($89.65) and pair it with your favorite blue jeans. Then, simple add a pair of Aldo’s Allday Boots ($55.99).

Gwen Stefani
Leave it to pop star/designer Gwen Stefani to take a cape to the next level! We love the way Gwen has paired her draped cape with silky harem-esque pants and lace-up ankle boots—her outfit feels fresh, sophisticated and totally modern. For a similar look, pair Lindsey Thornburg’s Mini Cloak Jacket ($964) or Chinti & Parker’s Cashmere Hooded Cape Wrap ($500) with See By Chloe’s Rouched Waist Harem Pants ($255) and Jessica Simpson’s Copito Boots ($79.99).
