Trend Report: Deco Dresses

In The Devil Wears Prada, Meryl Streep’s character Miranda Priestly eloquently explains how in fashion everything trickles down from the runway. Not that we would dare to disagree, but if you take a look at the latest trend to make waves on the red carpet—deco dresses, to be specific—you will surely notice a look that was spotted all over the spring runways. On that note, if you are ready to be in such good company as Gucci and Alberta Ferretti, not to mention top tastemakers like Charlize Theron and Zoe Saldana, we suggest you click through to today’s Trend Report for all the need-to-know details on this must-try trend.

Who is trying this trend?
Zoe Saldana was one of the first stars to try this trend, choosing a black and gold Gucci dress for the LACMA Art + Film Gala in Los Angeles back in November. Later that month, Charlize Theron wore a stunning Gucci dress to the Gotham Independent Film Awards in New York City. In December, Amanda Seyfried picked out a silver and gold Alberta Ferretti dress for the launch of the Cle de Peau Beaute spring 2012 collection in New York City. Finally, just last month, Emmy Rossum wore a shimmering Ralph Lauren dress to the second season premiere of Shameless in Los Angeles.

How are they styling it?
Eagle-eyed fashion fans will notice a few key themes when it comes to styling a deco dress like an expert. Firstly, all four of our muses have opted for heels that match their dress. For instance, Zoe picked a pair of black and gold Gucci heels that were a perfect match for her Gucci dress. Charlize wore a pair of gold Tom Ford sandals, which emphasized the gold waistband on her dress. Amanda opted for a pair of silver and gold Jimmy Choo heels that nicely complemented her dress, while Emmy picked a pair of silver Ralph Lauren heels that accessorized her Ralph Lauren dress flawlessly.

In terms of accessories, these dresses make such a statement that it is wise to keep your accessories to a minimum. If jewelry is your poison, we suggest you follow in the footsteps of Amanda and Charlize and opt for a delicate draped necklace. As for a clutch, we love the minaudière clutches that both Charlize and Emmy carried—just make sure to coordinate yours with the colors in your dress.

How can I make this look my own?
One of the things we like most about this trend is that there is something for every budget. For instance, if you want to invest in something really special, we suggest you check out Gucci’s Silk Chain Dress ($10,500) and Blumarine’s Cocktail Dress ($3,905). If you aren’t feeling that price tag, we love French Connection’s Flapper Dress ($286) and Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti’s Short Dress ($325). Finally, for the budget-conscious, you simply must check out Foley + Corinna’s Bead-Embellished Silk-Chiffon Dress ($216), Rare’s Deco Embellished Tunic Dress ($81), and TFNC’s Deco Embellished Chiffon Dress ($70).

What about accessories?
If you are looking for a pair of heels to go with your deco dress, we love Ralph Lauren’s Achelle Metallic Sandals ($35) and Aldo’s Ikeja Heels ($35)—both have a simple yet sexy feel. As for clutches, we think Whiting & Davis’s Crystal Crisscross Minaudiere Clutch ($275) and Rachel Zoe’s Margaux Minaudiere ($250) are top picks. If you want to keep it simple with a piece of jewelry, check out Tinley Road’s Deco Tassel Necklace ($38) and Orelia’s Triple Row Star Necklace ($13).
