Trend Report: Hot Pants

It is time to get your gams into shape because hot pants and boy shorts are making a huge comeback this season. Super-short shorts were scattered throughout the Spring 2010 runway shows; big labels like Blumarine and Balmain were early-adopters. Since then, several ahead-of-the-game celebrities have been seen sporting the look, including French fashionista, Carine Roitfeld, and our perennial favorite, Nicole Richie.

For this spring season, the hot pants/boy shorts trend isn’t limiting. In fact, it’s wide open. While labels like Balmain and Iceberg went for rock & roll-inspired leather hot pants, brands like Marc Jacobs and Nicole Miller kept things feminine with vintage touches.

For you, the choices are endless, as are the styling options. For the less outlandish among us, simple denim cut-offs are an easy option that can be dressed up or down. For those who prefer a wild, more out-there look, there are a ton of embellishments to choose from, including zippers, studs and sequins. With that, we present to you February’s edition of our Trend Report.

In November 2009, French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld (far left) headed to her sons gallery exhibition wearing a pair of tight boy shorts underneath a black lace dress; the epitome of French chic. She completed her outfit with a pair of on-trend thigh high boots and a cape, of course. For a similar look, try American Apparel’s Cotton Spandex Jersey High-Waist Hot Short ($22) with Topshop’s Lace Strappy Maxi Dress ($65) and Steve Madden’s HiRise Boots ($249.95).

Lo Bosworth (second from left) loves to keep things simple and is often seen wearing easy pieces in neutral colors. Here, she opted for a pair of high-waisted cotton shorts, mixed with a leather jacket and a pair of suede pumps. Grab this pair of Shortie High Waisted Shorts ($28) from Free People and add Illia’s Classic Leather Jacket ($277.20). These Carley Suede Platform Pumps ($98) by Calvin Klein will complete the look.

Earlier this month, Jessica Alba (middle) went for an unusually eclectic ensemble while hanging out in Los Angeles. Jessica paired a pair of denim shorts with a plaid shirt, leather jacket and Prada harness boots. Start your look off with these Roll Cuff Shorts ($24.99) by Paris Blues, and then add Forever21’s Pintucked Plaid Woven Shirt ($19.90). Finish off the look with these Lakota Harness Boots ($149.95) by Sam Edelman.

As always, Nicole Richie (second from right) dresses to impress, this time at the launch of her new Winter Kate clothing line. Nicole gave her edgier side a whirl, wearing a pair of cut-off shorts with a crochet vest and suede ankle booties. For a similar look, try Forever21’s Distressed Washed Denim Short ($19.80) with Sass & Bide’s Duty Calls Vest ($390) and J Crew’s Metropolitan Suede Ankle Boots ($250).

Our final dose of inspiration comes from Milla Jovovich, a girl who loves to pair classic pieces with more bohemian styles. As always, Milla looks chic and streamlined with an on-trend boyfriend blazer, cut-off denim hot pants and printed ballet flats. dVb’s Sandblast Star Denim Hot Pant ($86.21), combined with a slouchy white tee and this Boyfriend Jacket ($77.99) by After Nature, are stylish stand-ins for Milla’s look.

I love Jessica Alba’s look the most. It looks stylish, effortless and cool. I’m not sure about the others. Milla’s outfit is fairly unflattering unfortunately. Great for summer, but it’s not as easy to style as a skirt!
