Trend Report: Leather Accents

Leather jackets have always been a wardrobe staple and are a timeless trend but this season the leather look has extended itself far beyond the jacket. Leather accents, from shorts to shoes, were scattered throughout the runway shows and recently we’ve seen a surge of celebrities rocking the look. From Whitney Port’s leather shorts to Nicky Hilton’s mini dress, the leather trend has revamped itself for this fall/winter season and at Mama’s A Rolling Stone, we love every bit of it.

There has always been something a little alluring about the use of leather in fashion. Its place in modern culture has seen it being used by everyone from cowboys to outlaw biker gangs to rock musicians, securing its place as a rough and ready fabric.

For this fall/winter season, the leather trend isn’t strict and is all about accents, meaning you can incorporate the look into your closet via virtually any form of clothing. Balmain’s use of leather in their collection included several super-tight bandage dresses. At Hermès, the used leather in earthy tones like chocolate and tan, sending bomber jackets and leather shorts down the runway. Alexander Wang, another huge proponent of leather, included body-hugging leather skinny pants as part of his collection.

For us, the leather trend is the ideal way to add a tough edge to your look. For the less outlandish, accents like leather jewelry and boots can be worn, while for the more out-there, a full leather dress or a draped trench coat is perfect. Similarly, the color you choose can represent your style. While black leather is classic, red and pink leather accents add an entirely new element to your outfit, as do embellishments like studs and zippers.

Whether you prefer to take your style cues from the runway, the stars or the streets, look around for leather accents this fall/winter season as they are set to be big. With that, we present to you December’s edition of our Trend Report.

Trend Report: Leather Accents

In September, Sienna Miller (far left) headed to the matinee performance of her play, After Miss Julie, in New York City, wearing a cropped leather jacket paired with skinny jeans, a floral blouse and Oxford shoes. She completed her outfit with her favorite Prada bag and a loose, messy bun. For a similar look, try Silence & Noise’s Satellite Moto Jacket ($128). Add Arrogant Cat’s Ruffle Neck Dirty Tee ($25.50, reduced from $83.29) and these Trompe L’oeil Wingtips ($140) from Anthropologie. Complete the look with Dagmar’s Zipper Jean ($239).

Whitney Port (second from left) loves to experiment with fashion and is often seen dressing in clothes that would make the average person balk at the thought. Here, she opted for a pair of high-waisted leather shorts, mixed with leopard ankle booties and a cropped, printed top. Grab this pair of Jake Leather Shorts ($350) by Mike & Chris and add Topshop’s Floral Cropped Cardigan ($50). These Leopard Print Booties ($39) from Newport News will complete the look.

In November, Kristen Stewart (middle) went for an unusually bold look while attending a New Moon event in Madrid. Kristen paired a tough, zippered pair of patent Gucci ankle boots with a sheer, striped mini dress. While we are partial to these Riddle Lace-Up Kilt Ankle Boots ($594.99, reduced from $850), also by Gucci, these Black Croc Patent Amber Ankle Boots ($144) by Pour La Victoire are a little more budget-friendly. Finish off the look with this Sleeveless Tonal Stripe Fire Dress ($34.99) from Macy’s.

Although Nicky Hilton (second from right) generally stays out of the limelight, she always dresses to impress when she heads to an event. At New York Fashion Week, Nicky tried out an edgy leather bandage dress with studded peep toe heels. For a similar look, try Theory’s Shosana Leather Dress ($495) and Luxury Rebel’s Paula Studded Peep Toe Pump ($239.95), with a dab of black nail polish.

Our final dose of inspiration comes from Olivia Palermo, a girl who loves her leather skinny pants and wears them often! As always, Olivia keeps things sleek and streamlined with an on-trend military jacket, statement jewelry and suede ankle boots. Blank’s Skinny Leather Pants ($158), when combined with this Tempest Jacket ($118.80) from French Connection, are stylish stand-ins for Olivia’s look.
