Trend Report: Polka Dots

Although many industry insiders will tell you that there are no rules when it comes to fashion, we at Mama’s A Rolling Stone headquarters believe there is one statute you should always keep in mind when you are getting dressed: have fun and plenty of it! Accordingly, we are thrilled to see that the latest must-try trend to hit the streets is as playful as they come: polka dots! Yes, dear readers, thanks to brands like Stella McCartney and Louis Vuitton, polka dots have hit the big time and while pulling them off is no cakewalk, with a little help from today’s muses—namely Beyonce, Rihanna, Liv Tyler, and Cheryl Cole—you will be dressed to impress in no time. On that note, click through to today’s Trend Report for all the details!

Beyonce
Beyonce consistently wows us with her fearless and fun sense of style and the outfit above is no exception. Back in April, Beyonce was spotted out to brunch in Paris, France, wearing a polka dot Marc Jacobs dress and peep-toe platform heels. We love the way the polka dot print adds some major punch to the ladylike silhouette. The result is a sophisticated and yet sassy ensemble. To put together a similar look, start by picking up Camilla and Marc’s Spotted Garden Silk-Georgette Dress ($490) or Motel’s Polka Dot Bandeau Dress ($51.70). Then, simply add a pair of Pelle Moda’s West Platform Pumps ($108.71) and you are all set!

Rihanna
If there is one thing we love about Rihanna, it is that she doesn’t shy away from trying new things. For instance, in April, Rihanna was spotted out to dinner in West Hollywood wearing a polka dot blouse, a pair of J Brand’s 1043 Shorts ($147), nude platform pumps, and an oversized hair bow. By opting for a colorful polka dot blouse instead of a simple tee or solid blouse, Rihanna has transitioned her look from simple to statement. Try this look for yourself by picking up Tucker’s Printed Silk-Chiffon Blouse ($280) or Topshop’s Polka Dot Pleat Top ($60) and pairing it with Black Rooster’s Cecile Pumps ($92) and ASOS’s Polka Dot Headscarf ($14.77).

Liv Tyler
Finding new ways to wear a classic like the little black dress can be tricky, but if anyone can pull it off, it is Liv Tyler—with a little help from one of her best girlfriends, Stella McCartney, naturally. Yes, dear readers, Liv wore a sheer polka dot-printed Stella McCartney dress to the opening of the designer’s new boutique in New York City earlier this month. We love the way the polka dot print takes this “little black dress” in a seasonal direction—it feels fresh, fun and slightly flirty. To give it a try, grab L’Agence’s Midnight Polka Dot Dress ($845) or Forever 21’s Dotted Bib Dress ($19.80). Complete your look with Marciano’s Opal Ankle-Strap Sandal ($157.95).

Cheryl Cole
In Britain, Cheryl Cole is a rising star in the fashion world, which means she is definitely one to watch here in America! Earlier this month, Cheryl was spotted in Chicago wearing a gorgeous Polka Dot Dress ($495) by Sonia by Sonia Rykiel, which she paired with polka dot platforms. By pairing her dress with shoes that have a similar print, Cheryl has shown she is willing to make bold moves when it comes to personal style—the ensemble is fashion-forward but it isn’t over the top. To create a similarly stylish ensemble, pick up Cheryl’s exact dress, or try TBA’s Polka Dot Sleeveless Dress ($228.97). Complete the look with Alice + Olivia’s Juliet Platform Wedge Sandals ($245).
