This fall, thanks to cool brands like Charlotte Ronson, Jean Paul Gaultier (pictured), and Temperley London, celebrities, models, and tastemakers alike are going wild about a decidedly modern trend: turbans. In vivid prints, plush velvets, or sophisticated patterns, we love how easily a turban can boost your look from simple to statement-making. The question is how can you make this look work for you? If you’re partial to a bohemian-luxe look, take notes from Russian model Sasha Pivovarova and Polish model Magdalena Frackowiak—both girls demonstrated how to mix and match hippie prints with ease. On the other hand, if you prefer a classic and sophisticated vibe, you’ll find plenty of inspiration if you look to ladies like Ashley Olsen and Salma Hayek. Of course, whichever way you go, we’re just positive you’ll love this 70s-inspired look. On that note, we present our latest Trend Report!
Russian model Sasha Pivovarova is known for her bold, playful, sometimes eccentric, and always stylish vibe. Case in point: in late September, Sasha was spotted at Vogue Paris’s 90th Anniversary masquerade ball in a lively ensemble that we just can’t get enough of. Specifically, she matched a brightly-printed turban with a colorful gown, and then added a fur-trimmed printed wrap. The result? Part 1920s flapper, part 1970s hippie-luxe. To recreate this look, start with a colorful turban or head scarf; we like Gold Saturn’s Spring Fling Turband ($32) and Eugenia Kim’s Gigi Head Scarf ($89.99). Add a bohemian spin to your ensemble with a similarly bright, printed dress, such as Bolongaro Trevor’s Demilo Pleat Bodice Multi-Color Dress ($89.31), Alexis Lennon’s V Neck Poncho Dress ($145) or Torn by Ronny Kobo’s Lucy Mini Dress ($76). To finish, look for a vintage shawl, such as Free People’s Vintage Black Lace Shawl ($88), and layer it under a faux fur stole.
Designer/actress Ashley Olsen is no stranger to bold fashion moves—between her and Mary-Kate, her twin, some of the most self-assured runway looks have been transformed into reality—so we weren’t surprised to spot Ashley in a printed turban back in June at the YSL Belle D’Opium fragrance launch. We love how she paired her turban with a sophisticated black trench coat and platform heels. The overall look is classic with a contemporary twist. To try this look for yourself, start with ModCloth’s Sonoran Desert Scarf ($21.99), which you can easily tie into a chic turban. Then, look for a sleek black trench coat—we like Alice + Olivia’s Klein Pleat Back Trench ($484) and Topshop’s Military Contrast Trench Coat ($170)—and layer it over a simple black dress. Complete your look with chunky platforms such as Yves Saint Laurent’s Palais Suede Cap-Toe Pumps ($995) or Steve Madden’s Izzie Pumps ($39.94).
There’s never any scarcity of style at fashion week and the Spring 2011 shows were no exception. Actress Salma Hayek was spotted at the Stella McCartney show in Paris wearing a printed turban, which she paired with a belted blue dress and thigh high boots. The look is sleek and stylish, and certainly highlights Salma’s impeccable taste. To create your own version of Salma’s perfectly put together look, start with an unfussy turban such as Gold Saturn’s Smoke Tie-Dye Turband ($26) or Carin Wester’s Marrekesh Turban ($78). Next, look for a sleek dress in a neutral color; we like French Connection’s Dani Crepe Dress ($172) and Vanessa Bruno’s Cotton-Blend Sweater Dress ($144). To finish your look, try a pair of thigh-high boots, such as Juicy Couture’s Gigi Boots ($350). Or, for something a little less bold, try a pair of polished pumps, like Colin Stuart’s Round-Toe Platform Pumps ($49).
Last, but certainly not least, we turn to stunning Polish model Magdalena Frackowiak, who was spotted between shows at New York Fashion Week wearing a pretty floral turban. We like how Magdalena contrasted her turban with the floral print on her sundress, creating an interesting mash-up of prints that totally works. Plus, with the addition of a jacket, you can translate this look for fall. To take your cues from Magdalena, start with a floral turban or head scarf; we like Madewell’s Moroccan Market Scarf ($58) and Forever 21’s Floral Embodied Headwrap ($4.80). Contrast it against a pretty floral sundress, such as Mink Pink’s Welcome To Paradise Dress ($52.50) or Iska’s Floral Babydoll Sundress ($30.33). In cold weather, a great leather jacket, such as Tinley Road’s Zip Moto Leather Jacket ($198) or Kenneth Cole Reaction’s Cropped Zip Front Jacket ($96), will keep you warm and modish.
