While Model/Musician Solange Knowles may have celebrated a birthday yesterday, we at MARS are celebrating some of our favorite looks from this stylish songstress. Knowles, the younger sister of Beyoncé, is a profound and powerful woman in her own right with killer style and an unconventional approach to life. Whether it’s shaving her head to wear her hair in it’s natural state, and talk about it with Oprah, signing to Next Models and being featured in the Madewell AW12 campaign, or launching her own record label “Saint Records”, this mama is a rolling stone with purpose.
Below we break down five of our favorite looks from Solange and how you can re-create them yourself:
Known for her undying support of emerging global designers, Solo chose Hatian designer Azzede Jean Pierre’s dress and jacket to rock this past February at the premiere of her sister’s documentary “Life is But A Dream”. The whole ensemble is perfection, minimalism at its best; from the structured shape and crisp white texture, to the simple yet effortlessly chic delicate black strappy sandals. While this is uniquely a one of a kind piece, we found this Adele Fado White Dress Shirt which falls right below the knees and has asymmetrical buttons which give it a bit of an edge. Pair it with Nasty Gal Vanish Sandals (the gradient lucite heel is a super-plus), add a few bangles and rings, and you’re ready to go. Oh, don’t forget the most important accessory; big hair.
In April of last year, Solange was spotted at the Splendid Soho store opening, not only performing her DJ duties, but her style maven duties as well. Continuing her exhibition of minimalism, she chose to wear a skirt by Nigerian designer Maki-Oh with a white t-shirt, Louboutin heels, a Lie Sang Bong perforated clutch and Mawi London jewelry. We’re obsessed with the thigh high slit details on this skirt, and found a similar skirt sans lace that would be complimented well with this relic collar necklace and lime green perforated bag.
Long White Jacket
In 2011, Solo made her way back to NYC, a major move from the city of angels to the concrete jungle, a move that proved to be a major shift in her wardrobe department. Out were the days of endless sunshine and in were the days of temperamental east coast weather. Remaining the queen of prints, infusing layers became a favorable wardrobe addition post-relocation. Here she is seen infusing prints with a classic long white jacket and we must say, it’s all about the jacket. This white Topshop Unique long line tuxedo jacket could be the cousin to her flowing piece and these reverrie printed pants at Threadscene- yes please.
Mommy + Me
Solange has mastered the art of exuding her own personal style in everything she does, her clothes vary from mod to modern Bohemia and everything in between while her music has taken us on a journey from Supreme’s glam to South African shanty’s. A tremendous inspiration in both the music and fashion worlds, her biggest role has been that of being a mother to her 8 year old son Juelz. Even in motherhood her versatility is ever-present, seen here at an NYC gallery opening in 2011 wearing the chicest mommy attire with her dashing date Juelz. If you love how understated this look is, as much as we do, try Lucca Couture’s version of her wide striped sweater atop these Vince Camuto skinny yellow ankle pants and a pair of Betsey Johnson leopard print peep toe pumps.
In May, Solange was spotted outside The David Letterman show, where she stopped by to perform a track from her “True” EP. and for this occasion, she chose a polka dot skirt suit from Moschino’s pre-fall ’13 collection. If you ever thought you couldn’t wear dots all over, Solange may have just changed your mind. Why not? It’s the summer and if you can wear the print on denim like this Topshop polka dot swing skirt and crop polka dot shirt-there are no excuses to at least trying. The best part of the whole outfit is, separately, these pieces pack just as much polka dot punch as they do together.
