Tribal patterns played a big part in the Spring 2010 runway shows, especially at Rodarte, where models wore bold, black tattoos. Then, Avatar hit the silver screen and people were even more inspired by tribal chic. Fast forward to March 2010: Vogue puts together an amazing editorial titled The Warrior Way.
Styled by the wonderful Grace Coddington and shot by David Sims, The Warrior Way features model Daria Werbowy in pieces by Balenciaga, Givenchy and Alexander McQueen. Daria cavorts in the jungle wearing tattered mini dresses and leather body armor, not to mention McQueen’s famous armadillo shoes.
I have always been a fan of tribal prints and this editorial is one of my March favorites. What do you think? Does Daria pull off the tribal look for you?

I see the McQueens! The Avatar effect on fashion is quite stunning. I love that this editorial was influenced by it. It is gorgeous.

Nice to see the Rodarte ‘tattoos’ being used over the (dare I say it?) slightly tacky, gimmicky Chanel ones. Much more powerful and cool – I may break out the permanent marker!

Hmmm…I’m always of two minds about these sorts of editorials. On the one hand, the fashion is gorgeous. On the other hand, it seems like Vogue is once again perpetuating the marginalization and exploitation of people of color.
