Long before The Sartorialist was trawling the streets of New York City for street style stars, there was Bill Cunningham who, for decades, has ridden his Schwinn bicycle around Manhattan, snapping street style photographs for the New York Times. Now, documentarian Richard Press has chronicled Cunningham’s celebrated career in Bill Cunningham New York. With commentary from Anna Wintour, Tom Wolfe, Brooke Astor and David Rockefeller, just to name a few, the film recounts Cunningham’s enormous body of work—from his photographs of high society soirées to his street snaps. Bill Cunningham New York opens at the Film Forum in New York on March 16, and the Nuart in Los Angeles on March 25, before opening around the country.
