Your Thoughts: Should Twitter Trolls Be Controlled?

Should Twitter trolls be controlled? We would love to hear your thoughts!

Your Thoughts: Should Twitter Trolls Be Controlled? As modern women, we know you have plenty of opinions! Here at Mama’s A Rolling Stone, we like to encourage healthy conversations and debates, so we are reintroducing our Your Thoughts column in order to hear your opinions on current events. Today’s topic: should Twitter trolls be controlled?

The Matter at Hand: Last week, model and Australia’s Next Top Model judge Charlotte Dawson (pictured) was reported to be recovering in hospital after an apparent suicide attempt. The cause? Persistent bullying on Twitter by “trolls,” who sent hundreds of mean tweets to Dawson, many of which urged Dawson to kill herself, because Dawson had called her home country of New Zealand “small, nasty, and vindictive.” Happily, Dawson is now recovering from her ordeal and has thanks fans for her support, but the issue certainly has not gone away.

To Discuss: Should Twitter take action and monitor the site to stop events like this from happening? Or do we have to take responsibility when we join sites like Twitter and understand that by opening ourselves up to the world in a public way, we open ourselves up to trolls and haters? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below!

Yes, twitter trolls should be monitored if they are acting as bullies. But so should bullies in general, no matter what forum they use. And to be honest, Charlotte Dawson has made a career out of bullying others. Its media culture as a whole that we should be taking a look at. Promoting personalities based on their ability to bully others sets the benchmark for others to follow.
