Model Style: Daria Werbowy

As one of the world’s highest earning and most sought after models, Canada’s Daria Werbowy is more than familiar with stealing the limelight.

As one of the world’s highest earning and most sought after models, Canada’s Daria Werbowy is more than familiar with stealing the limelight; while all eyes usually turn to Daria for her signature runway walk or striking editorial presence, today we are focusing our attention on her off-duty aura. Specifically, we’re ready to dive headfirst into Daria’s effortlessly chic aesthetic and delve into the modish motorcycle jackets, subtly sexy minidresses and vintage-inspired pieces that make up Daria’s off-the-clock ensembles. Whether she’s rocking leather pants on the streets of Paris, or sporting an ethnic vest backstage at a runway show, it is her carefree approach to fashion that makes Daria the obvious choice for this edition of Model Style.

Before we delve into our model muse’s noteworthy style, let us first give a little background. Although Daria had never considered a career in the modeling industry, she was discovered at the age of fourteen by a friend’s mother and spontaneously signed on with a Canadian modeling agency. After winning a national modeling competition, she moved to Elite and, after several ups and downs, landed an exclusive deal with Prada. The rest, as they say, was history; Daria currently holds the record for opening and closing the most shows in one season and has walked for such heavyweights as Yves Saint Laurent, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Chanel. As one of the most in-demand models in the fashion world, it is no surprise that our stunning starlet knows a thing or two about style.

Although there are many things we love about Daria’s off-duty ensembles, we are particularly fond of her ability to mix contemporary pieces with vintage. Spotted leaving Balmain’s Spring 2010 show in Paris (far left), Daria used two model staples – leather pants and a loose tank top – as the basis of her outfit, and then added a selection of colorful or quirky extras – think vintage vest, oversized hobo bag and simple flip-flops – to make it her own. For a similarly stylish ensemble, we like Avanti’s Leather Skinny Legging ($99.99) paired with Old Navy’s Lightweight Henley Tank ($6), Havaianas’s Slim Flip Flops ($19.95) and Route 63’s Canvas Hobo Bag ($49.50). For a modern take on Daria’s vintage vest, try Ralph Lauren’s Mabel Point Vest ($695.20) or Topshop’s Floral Quilted Waistcoat ($70).

Of course, we are always partial to a starlet who reuses her favorite pieces time and time again; while out and about in Paris (second from left), Daria sported her favorite black leather pants, this time combining them with a bohemian fur-trimmed vest and a comfortably cute hooded sweater. For a similarly low-key look, try C&C California’s Oversized Fleece Hoodie ($84) with Golden Goose’s Western Fur Vest ($1,004.50). Finish off the look with a pair of Pied A Terre’s Osborne Flat Zip Ankle Boots ($202.91).

It goes without saying that Daria’s panache for fashion extends further than the streets; at the grand re-opening of Toronto’s St. Regis Room, Daria worked a stylish party look (middle) that stayed true to her rocker-chic aesthetic. Her skintight Herve Leger bandage dress, in various girly shades of pink and red, was offset by the cropped moto jacket and thigh-high boots. For your own party-perfect look, try Asos’s Frill Front Body Con Dress ($43.96) with Rezrekshn’s Leather Buckle-Front Motorcycle Jacket ($198). A pair of suede over-the-knee boots – such as The Highest Heel’s Perfect Boot ($99.95) or Delman’s Jacey Boot ($357) – will complete the look.

Back in 2009, for the opening of New York’s Topshop store, Daria once again turned to her own closet for inspiration; firm favorites – the worn-in hoodie and leather biker jacket – reappeared, this time paired with grey skinny jeans and lace-up boots. A pair of 7 For All Mankind’s Gummy Jean Leggings ($169) will start your outfit off on the right note; pair these with a pair of Jeffrey Campbell’s Rilla Boots ($288) and Botkier’s Tao Cross-Body Hobo Bag ($300) and you are good to go.

Before we close, we must pay homage to Daria’s flair for feminine fashion. At the 2009 Glamour Magazine Beauty Awards, Daria stole the show (far right) in a snow white, figure-hugging minidress and pale pink blazer; lest the ensemble veer into the “too girly” category, Daria added her signature tomboy twist with a chunky pair of lace-up ankle boots. For a similarly girly get-up, try Black Halo’s Blake Mini Dress ($375) or Alexander Wang’s Cutout Ponte Dress ($392) with a pastel blazer; we like Gestuz’s Double Breasted Soft Tailored Blazer ($169.09). While Daria’s Balmain booties are no longer available, Nine West’s Digger Bootie ($112.46) makes for a stylish substitute.
